The adventure of Domaine Ponsot began in 1872. From the Dijon bourgeoisie, and a landowner in Saint Romain, William Ponsot acquired the Clos des Monts Luisants and a plot in Clos de la Roche in Morey Saint Denis in 1872. Hit hard by the phylloxera crisis, William had to uproot his vines. In 1911, he chose to replant his white wine plot in Clos de Monts Luisants with the original grape variety, Aligoté. The vines from 1911 are still there more than 100 years later. His godson, Hippolyte Ponsot, who succeeded him in 1920, expanded the estate with another plot in Clos de la Roche. In the 1920s and 30s, he undertook a major replanting effort with Pinot Noir vines because the quality of the vines replanted immediately after the phylloxera epidemic did not meet his standards. Imbued with the values of scouting and a keen geologist, Jean-Marie Ponsot is driven by an understanding and respect for Nature. From the 1950s onward, he emphasized the importance of working the soil: cultivating living soils, aerating them but not compacting them. These values still guide us today. The straddle tractor replaced the horse in 1965, but mechanization doesn't dictate everything: our hillside vineyards are still planted traditionally on terraces.
