The Rhone Valley is made up of two distinct districts - Northern and Southern Rhone. Both located along the banks of the Rhone River, but shows significant differences in both terroir and wine styles.
It is a big red wine region with different grape varietals used for each district. Northern Rhone’s red wines uses Syrah, while the South uses Grenache, mixed with other red grape varietals such as Syrah, Carignan, Mourvedre and Cinsault. And these are considered ‘Rhone varieties’ that have since been adopted by international wine countries.
The wine style differs too, with the north are typically deeply coloured, tannic, powerful and long-lived. While wines of the south, that is Grenache based, are less tannic yet with high alcohol, lower in acidity and potentially concentrated.
With wines of Rhone making an upturn this year, this would be a great opportunity to discover these fine labels from this historical wine region this weekend.
